First off – HAPPY NEW YEAR! I hope everyone had a great New Year’s Eve and got to celebrate the new year with lots of joy and love.
On to the update – As you may recall, my mom had some (1.2 liters) fluid drained from her left lung last Friday. She was feeling a lot better initially. When she went to Deerfield to get the XGeva shot (makes her bones inhospitable to cancer cells) they did an xray and found the fluid had returned. So now she has to have a catheter placed in her lung. This will allow them to drain the fluid that builds up without her needing to go into the hospital. She will have a home health nurse come daily or every other day to drain whatever fluid has built up. We are hoping this will help with her shortness of breath and give her a little more energy.
She’s at Gardens Hospital for this one. We are very lucky to have one of my best friends father, who is a very good cardiothroracic surgeon, placing the tube. So we know she’s in good hands! She’s in the hospital now and will have the placement in 2-3 hours and they will keep her over night for observation.

We live in a world where cancer touches everyone’s lives nowadays. We talk about it openly. We pray , we hope, we cry, we run, we race, we fight, we survive, and we love! But we never lose! I can not think of anyone —from all of my 38 years of teaching–that I respect more, look up to more than you. I remember when we first met—you were my ESE coordinator at Roosevelt Elementary. I remember you would talk so openly about yourself–your children–your ADHD (how funny), your home. your views as an educator, your philosophy, etc. AND THEN, you went back in to the classroom, teaching first grade. I then saw how you used everything that you had talked about for all those years as the ESE coordinator in your classroom and it was amazing. YOU are a great person, a great mother, (look at your children), a great teacher to many, a great role model, a great friend. AND I could go on and on. YOU have touched so…….many lives that I couldn’t even begin to count. AND you will continue to do so. I pray that you will continue to shine your light. Love you! Terri

Hi, Tinker,
They are only having to drain twice a week. It also helps relieve some pain. It makes a big difference in breath! My love to both you and Al.

I left a reply over the Christmas break but I do not know if you actually got it or not. (You know me, I really do not know what I am doing when it comes to this technology stuff–I do not even know what a blog is and believe you me, I have cussed this thing out several times. For the longest time, this site kept giving me three chances to get on, and for some reason, I couldn’t get registered. Wonder why? LOL)) But I wanted you to know that I have been thinking a lot about you, You are so incredible. I would love to text you some time. Maybe I will just try, since it is something that I know how to do. Keep your chin up, keep smiling, eat, eat, eat…..in order to keep your strength up…eat lots of liver…yuck! Nevertheless, it is really good for you and your blood. Whenever you feel strong, let me know how you are. Love, Terri

Hi Liz, I’ve been thinking and praying for you. I was going to stop by over break but was fighting sickness and didn’t want to take the chance passing it onto you. Unfortunately I’m home sick now but resting. I miss you and am very proud of you for fighting this awful disease! You are AMAZING! Just keep fighting because you have ALOT of love and SPUNKY attitude to beat this! I’m coming to visit once I’m well. Tell Ramone Ruben and I are very happy that he has been your rock and knew from the beginning you two were meant for each other! Love you and STAY STRONG! <3

Keep up the fight, Liz. We’re all sending our best wishes and prayers that everything will turn around in your favor. Are you still interested in phone calls, or not at this time? Good Luck and a speedy recovery!

I am better at texting right now due to being short winded. Thank you for prayers. I am certain they are helping!

Working in the same hospitals that Liz has been in, I am able to stop in and check on her- even got to see her in the recovery room. I must say that she is one of the bravest people I know. Every time I walk in the room, she has a big smile on her face and looks like she did not have any procedures or tests done. Liz, you have a remarkable spirit and I know it is helping you get through a very challenging time- and will continue to do so.

Thank you, Randi. Your visits and supportive words help so much!

She’s out of surgery and is in a room at Gardens. I just video chatted with her and she looks good and sounds good, though she’s a little sore.

Sending lots of love to you all and your mom. She is a fighter. Hoping that the catheter does the trick and helps her feel better. Sending hugs 🙂 Will be thinking of her as she goes through this procedure and hope she is more comfortable when it is done. Love. Aunt Debbie
