Ok medical professionals – we need some advice on anemia. My mom has always had some issues with anemia at certain points of her life and now its rearing its ugly head again. She dealt with a little anemia a few months back, but was able to bring those levels back up soon after. Now today’s blood results showed that she was back to being slightly anemic.
I thought I would throw out a call for advice: What are your suggestions for helping to treat anemia?
She does have some food restrictions. Because her immune system is so compromised, she can’t eat foods that are at risk of having bacteria, molds or other icky stuff. No uncooked egg yolk, rare meat, some cheeses, raw veggies… you get the idea.
So let us know what you think.
Thanks everyone!

I would agree with the above reply from Randi. The oncologist surely should know what to recommend

Not sure if this is the best advice, but I know of some patients that have tried this. When you are anemic, it helps to have enough iron in your body. Foods that help that are dried fruits and soy products/tofu. It may also help to have a source of folic acid (bananas, orange juice), and vitamin C. Liz, if you can’t eat those foods, there are always vitamin supplements for iron, folic acid, and vitamin C. I am sure that you doctors also have Epogen or Procrit that they can give you. This is an injection that helps stimulate the bone marrow to make more red blood cells. It is often used with chemo and also with our kidney patients. Hope this can help, along with our prayers and love.
